Current Series: Mundiville

I’ve been working…  on a new picture series called (for now) “Mundiville“… not sure yet? The series is a compilation of Etchings and Paintings, but of course they all start as sketches. So, because this is an art blog I’ll show the ideas from the beginning and you can watch them grow!

As of today, each idea is at a different point in it’s development. From here on out the progress posts will trickle in one by one – I assure you!

If you’re interested in the actual process let me know – I can post more technical stuff. Or rather if you’re interested in the story (what the heck I’m thinking…) I can add that as well.

You know this but… Click on a thumbnail and you’ll see it larger, read my process comments, be able to leave your own comments and advance to the next image. Super duper my friends.

Time stood still no longer… (Creation Myth Part 1)

And in that moment, time stood still no longer, the soul of the world conspired. The sky, conjoined at the horizon of the sea, together they knew no other, and they were one in the same body, two heads and one heart. Their bond, a love that is forged in the creation of everything, has been there before time began and will be here after time ceases to exist. The language they speak has no words, it is the language of the cosmos, the language that knows no beginning and no end, it is the language of love.

This is my very first Intaglio or etching! I have a lot to learn but the process is pretty fun and full of potential.

Bearded Venus “She Shines Strongly”

bearded venus by Jeanette Vieira

bearded venus by Jeanette Vieira

Could Venus really have been bald and bearded?

We may never know.

However ‘living’ bearded woman such as Zenobia whom have had strong, independent character combined with exotic sexual appeal makes this Venus all the more Mytho-rific.  I choose to believe the lore!

Excerpt from “Folk Lore. Transactions of the Folk-Lore Society” 1945.

The Bearded Venus (text) by Alexander H Krappe.

In an interesting study published in France a few years before the First World War, the late Morris Jastrow commented on a curious passage occurring in a hymn to the goddess Istar and reading: “She has a beard like the god Asur.” This text has long been used to

223 Light bulbs later… Tribute to Historic Neon

JUST IN: Special thanks to “WALKING AROUND IN SAN DIEGO” blogger, Jorge for  the box props.

After about 24 (wo)man hours and 223 light bulbs… I’ve finished my second Utility Box Project. Special thanks to my supporters, especially Dad and Dennis who came out and hung out while I worked.

Now, something silly… a poem about neon (Am I a dork?).

Last year I wrote this  for a little book I put together called “Neon Nostalgia and other Roadside Oddities”, I think it’s appropriate for this post.

The unassuming beauty of its half-lit, faded facade,

beats a nostalgic rhythm into your mind,

one lonely blink at a time.

Blink, blink…

Blink, blink…

the rhythem beats peacefully into the dawn

beckoning the next decade,

the next eon.

The location of the “Historic Neon” box is 68th and Imperial Ave.

Relative & Absolute Truths

Relative & Absolute Truths

A note on Time:

Think for a moment. Have you ever had the feeling that time flew? How about that feeling of time standing still? If you said yes to either one of these then you’ve experienced relative time. Relative time is time that you feel.On the other hand, you may be more aquatinted with  absolute time. This is the time you see on your watch, it is the time you wake up for work or set TIVO to record your favorite show.

Recently I experienced relative time but I had no idea until AFTER I experienced it. The weekend went by and it felt like a whole week long of experiences, I got more out of my weekend!  Saturday and Sunday was the same forty-eight hours that it always is, but it felt so satisfyingly more.

The Cyclops baby challenges our perception of time.

Meanings/Inspiration of Neve:

  • Relative & Absolute Truths/ Time
  • Surya -opposition between relative and absolute truth
  • Cyclops himself! – Greek Mythology
  • The moon dial on my mother’s grandfather clock – I like to see both sun and moon at the same time!
  • Author James Baldwin’s “The Price of the Ticket” /Shipped Wrecked in the New World.
  • The Lovely Dani who inspired the drool and the wreckage

Public Art; Sprucing up Imperial Ave. San Diego

My concept was created with Sonsa Flora, my Mother Earth Archetype. She opens her arms with the sun and closes at night to sustain warmth. Like a flower she feels the heart beat of the earth, she is nature and the cycle of life.
